Historic Buddhist Temple

Delgamuwa Raja Maha Viharaya is a historic Buddhist temple renowned for its role in safeguarding the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha during the Portuguese colonial period. In 1549, fearing for the relic's safety, Hiripitiye Divana Rala, the custodian of the relic, entrusted it to King Mayadunne of Sitawaka. Subsequently, the relic was hidden within a Kurahan (maize) grinding stone at this temple, where it remained concealed for over 40 years until it was safely relocated to Kandy in 1592 .
